The Endowment Fund of the Unitarian Church of Evanston

What is the UCE Endowment Fund and what is its purpose?

The Endowment Fund is a separate fund administered by 3 trustees elected by the congregation.  It was created to build a strong and lasting foundation for UCE.  The endowment fund is separate from the operating budget which is used for the day-to-day operations of the church.  The Endowment Fund is to be used for special projects and/or programs approved by the Board of Trustees and not contemplated or covered within the operating budget.

What type of projects and programs can the Endowment Fund support?

The Endowment Fund Agreement provides that the Endowment Fund can be used for any of the following purposes:

  • Special church projects not anticipated or provided for by the operating budget.
  • Projects that support the communities in which UCE resides including spiritual, educational and economic needs.
  • Projects for enhancing, repairing, supplementing or improving UCE’s building and property.
  • Scholarships and grants to UCE members and staff for education and training.
  • Projects or programs that support the wider mission of Unitarian Universalism.

Who decides when and how to spend funds within the Endowment Fund?

The Board of Trustees may request up to 5% of the assets of the Endowment Fund on an annual basis for one or more of the special purposes as provided in the Endowment Fund Agreement.  The Endowment Fund trustees review each request to determine that it satisfies the requirements for distribution.

How can I give to the Endowment Fund?

There are many ways to give to the Endowment Fund.  Many individuals make cash donations to the fund during their lifetime.  Others include the church in their estate plan (that is, their Will or trusts) to take effect at their death.  Some individuals have purchased life insurance policies naming UCE as the beneficiary.  The Endowment Fund can also receive donations of stocks, bonds or other property.  You should contact a member of the Endowment Fund Committee with your specific questions and concerns.

How do I let the church know it is already included in my estate planning?

It’s very simple.  Just send the church or the Endowment Fund Committee a letter stating that you have named the church in your Will and/or trust as a beneficiary of your estate, with details of who to contact.  A sample letter is available from the committee, or you can consult with your attorney or financial planner.  It is the policy of UCE that all bequests to UCE pursuant to a person’s Will or trust be directed to the Endowment Fund unless the document clearly requires some other purpose.

What is The Nellie Brough Society and The Community of All Souls?

The Community of All Souls and The Nellie Brough Society are two programs adopted by the Endowment Fund Committee to encourage, honor and recognize individuals who donate to the Endowment Fund.

The Nellie Brough Society is for individuals who make a $10,000 or greater contribution to the Endowment Fund during their lifetime or who have advised the Endowment Fund Committee in writing that the church has been named as a beneficiary in their Will and/or trust.  It is named for Nellie Brough who was one of the founders of our church.

The Community of All Souls was established to encourage wide participation in the endowment program. The name comes from the All Souls Church, which is the original name of our congregation. Individuals and families make annual or special contributions, large and small, to recognize family birthdays, or to acknowledge others, living and dead, who are important in their lives. To become a member, get an enrollment form in the church office or print one  AS enrollment form  and return it filled out to the church office.

Donors who are members of either or both The Community of All Souls and The Nellie Brough Society are recognized by name on a plaque outside the sanctuary. The Endowment Fund Committee also gives thanks and recognition to members through special events.
